Event Description :: Kumite (sparring)
To win a traditional karate kumite match, a competitor must score one Ippon (full point) technique or two Waza-ari (half point) techniques. A match lasts one and half minutes based on “effective time.” i.e. Time when actual competition is taking place. Kumite competition is divided into three categories: Men’s Individual, Women’s Individual and Men’s Team (3 persons)
- Scoring
Ippon is defined as a full point. It is awarded for the
execution of a Todome (finishing blow) and must combine
effective timing (neutralizing the opponent’s reaction)
and distance. A Todome must be delivered to an acceptable
target. Acceptable targets are the face and the front of the
torso from above the belt to the upper chest. The back is also
an acceptable target if the opponent has turned away.
Waza-ari is defined as a half point and is award for a technique that meets the criteria of an Ippon but falls short of a Todome. In the event neither competitor scores, the player with no penalties wins. In the event of a tie, a deciding 30 second “sudden death” match ensues. The first competitor to score wins the match.
