Event Description :: Kata (form)

Kata is the precise execution of a sequence of karate techniques which simulate defense against one or more attackers. A competitor performing a kata at its highest level should demonstrate the mental and physical intensity of a kumite match. Kata competition is divided into two categories: Women’s Individual and Men’s Individual

  • Scoring

During eliminations, judges award basic points minus penalty points. During finals, judges award basic points plus skill points minus penalty points. The average score during eliminations ranges from 6.4 to 6.7. The average score during finals ranges from 8.0 to 8.5.

  • Basic points are given for:

Body Dynamics - The degree of power generated by muscle action and proper breathing
Power - The degree of speed and control matching the objective of the technique combine with the intensity of will or spirit
Form - Balance in stance, posture, and coherence combined with mental concentration
Transition - Continuity from technique to technique combine with appropriate rhythm and timing

  • Skill points are given for:

Mastery of the fine details of each technique
The level of impression the demonstrator makes as a result of the demonstrator’s understanding of the application of each technique along with the display of a high level of skill, grace, and spirit

  • Penalties are given for:

Hesitation
Loss of balance
Not ending on the starting point
Etiquette- Ignoring the instructions of the head judge, failing to bow, bad attitude
